We have been waiting for an exciting Korean flick to hit the cinemas, and this was possibly the best timing ever for us. This thriller movie kept us in our seats, it was a good mix, some misses here and there, but in overall it was good entertainment. If you wanted a good thriller for the evening, get into this one!
Project Silence is an engaging disaster thriller that offers a mix of suspense, drama, and action. Directed by Kim Tae Gon, this South Korean film keeps you on the edge of your seat with its well-crafted storyline and solid performances. The actors and actresses were spot on in this movie.
The movie starts with deteriorating weather conditions that impair visibility on an airport bridge, leading to a catastrophic series of collisions and explosions. Amidst the chaos, military experiment dogs known as “Echo” break free and begin attacking the human survivors. Various characters, including a government official, a tow truck driver, an elderly couple, and two sisters, find themselves stranded and must fight for their lives as they attempt to escape the collapsing bridge.
Lee Sun Kyun delivers a strong performance as a presidential aide caught in the disaster. His scenes with Kim Su An, who plays his daughter, are particularly effective, showcasing a believable father-daughter relationship amidst the chaos. Ju Ji Hoon adds a touch of humor and charm as a tow truck driver, offering some lighter moments in an otherwise tense narrative.
Visually, the movie makes excellent use of Korea’s landscapes and urban settings. The fog-covered bridge scenes are particularly striking, creating a claustrophobic and tense atmosphere. The cinematography by Hong Kyung Pyo, known for his work on Parasite, helps elevate the film’s visual appeal. Constantly set in the dark, some cinematic scenes were a bit obscured somehow to define what the details were in each scene. Not particularly to our liking, but one can appreciate the darkness the directors were trying to achieve.
One of the film’s strengths is its ability to build suspense without relying on cheap jump scares. Kim Tae Gon uses close-up shots and slow reveals effectively, creating a creeping sense of dread that keeps you on edge. The music and sound design also play a crucial role in enhancing the movie’s atmosphere, with a subtle yet powerful score that complements the scenes without overpowering them.
However, Project Silence is not without its shortcomings. The pacing can be uneven at times, with some scenes feeling dragged out while others rush through key plot points. The story, while engaging, follows a somewhat predictable path and lacks the innovative twists that could have made it stand out more. Despite these issues, the movie does offer moments of genuine tension and emotional depth. Elements of basic human common sense, were left in the dumps when at times for example one should not approach a ferocious and terrifying looking dog obviously. Nevertheless, we guess dramatizations are required to add a sense of suspense or exasperation depending on the audience.
The characters are well-developed, with clear motivations and backstories that add richness to the narrative. These elements help keep the audience invested, even when the plot takes a familiar route. The film includes moments of quiet reflection, allowing the characters to develop and giving the audience a chance to connect with them more deeply. It’s during these moments that the true heart of the movie shines through, adding an emotional layer to the suspense.
Project Silence is more than just entertainment; it’s an experience. The movie respects its audience, trusting you to piece together the story rather than spoon-feeding every detail. This approach makes the film rewarding to watch.
Director Kim Tae Gon deserves praise for his vision and execution. He has created a movie that is visually and emotionally captivating, with attention to detail evident in every frame. Project Silence showcases Kim Tae Gon’s talent and creativity, making it a solid addition to the disaster thriller genre.
In summary, Project Silence combines very good acting, striking cinematography, and a thriller story to create a worthy movie experience. It’s a film that will keep you engaged, make you think, and provide some genuine thrills. If you enjoy well-made, thought-provoking thrillers, Project Silence is worth a watch.
So, while it may not be a masterpiece, Project Silence offers enough to make it a solid 7/10 experience. It’s a thrilling ride that provides a blend of suspense, emotion, and visual beauty, making it a decent pick for your movie night.
